Terra Nova Solar tent
On this ride, we've tried to shave some weight by using Terra Nova's
ultra compact Solar tent. Weighing in at less than two kilos, it's
a single pole design that packs down extremely small. Ideally, it's
a one man tent - luckily, Rosal herself is very compact - and as
such it's perfectly roomy.
Despite it's size, the Solar's fly sheet offers a big porch for
stowing panniers whilst the inner tent has huge opening for easy
access and great morning views. Limited by it's one pole system,
the Solar cannot be pitched free-standing, a potential problem on
harder ground. Overall build quality is excellent. Unfortunately
tent pegs are a little weak and prone to bending on hard ground,
but can be easily remoulded. Designed as a ultra-lightweight tent,
the Solar has it's limitations - but for slimline bike touring,
it's hard to beat.
Terra Nova also make the Voyager model, which we have used on previous
tours. For two people, this is our favourite tent. It weighs in
at just 2.5 kilos can be pitched free-standing, ideal for hard ground
or mozzi besieged roof tops. It's a sturdy, spacious tent with handy
storage pockets, excellent Easton poles and lightweight but super-
strong tent pegs. A design classic.
